Elevated blood lead concentrations and vitamin D deficiency in winter and summer in young urban children.
Environ Health Perspect. 2007 Apr;115(4):630-5. Epub 2006 Dec 18.

Kemp FW, Neti PV, Howell RW, Wenger P, Louria DB, Bogden JD.

BACKGROUND: It is widely recognized that blood lead concentrations are higher in the summer than in winter. Although the effects of some environmental factors such as lead in dust on this phenomenon have been studied, relationships to sunlight-induced vitamin D synthesis have not been adequately investigated. Vitamin D status is influenced by the diet, sunlight exposure, age, skin pigmentation, and other factors, and may modify gastrointestinal lead absorption or release of lead stored in bones into the bloodstream.

Moderators of environmental intervention effects on diet and activity in youth

Am J Prev Med. 2007 Feb;32(2):163-72. Epub 2006 Dec 29

Department of Health Education and Health Promotion, Universiteit Maastricht, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: The complexity of the relationship between environmental factors on the one hand and dietary behavior and physical activity on the other necessitates the search for moderators of environmental influences. The current evidence base is reviewed regarding potential moderating factors in the effectiveness of environmental interventions aimed at diet and/or physical activity of children and adolescents.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away: Children’s evaluative categories of food.

Nquyen SP.

Appetite. 2007 Jan;48(1):114-8. Epub 2006 Sep 7.

Department of Psychology, University of North Carolina, 601 South College Road, Wilmington, NC 28403 5612, USA.

This study explores how children evaluatively categorize foods based on their nutritional value. Three-year-olds, four-year-olds, seven-year-olds, and adults completed a task in which they categorized a list of 70 foods as healthy or junky. The results showed important developmental differences in participants' ability to accurately classify foods as healthy/junky and to provide relevant justifications for these classifications. These results suggest that a large amount of category learning occurs with development, especially as children incorporate different types of information about food nutrition into their evaluative category representations.

This study examined weight-related issues affecting elementary school children to gain insight into how best to address these issues within a school-based intervention. The study population included 21 students, 12 school staff members, and 21 parents from a school that serves an ethnically-diverse population. Data were collected using focus groups and individual interviews and were analyzed using qualitative research methodology. Weight-related teasing and poor body image emerged as prominent issues affecting students. Results suggest that programs aimed at the prevention of weight-related disorders should go beyond issues of nutrition and physical activity and include strategies to reduce weight-related mistreatment and to improve students' body image.
